Dear Subscribers:

As the little corner newsboy would holler in those old black 'n' white movies, "Extra! Extra!" We're sending you this special edition of the newsletter because of 1) the special circumstances of the still-undecided 2000 US presidential election, and 2) a "late-breaking" article on the subject by SafeKids.com's Larry Magid.

This year's election is certainly "more than just an abstract civics lesson," Larry points out in his Family Tech column, uploaded today to the San Jose Mercury News site. Americans (grownups no less than kids, and probably a lot of people in other countries) are struggling to come to grips with how the Electoral College vote is being decided, and with how this part of the democratic process, American-style, works. It's a great opportunity for kids and parents, students and teachers to dig in and figure it out together.

Larry provides a fund of links just right for the discussion. "While all of the sites looked at for this column are appropriate for kids," he writes, "some are enlightening for adults as well." Parents and teachers, do email us about any such Web-enabled election discussion that you have at home or school - via feedback@netfamilynews.org.

And, for all who celebrate it, have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Sincerely,

Anne Collier, Editor
