Laws & child exploitation

September 7, 2007 By Anne Leave a Comment

The Vancouver Sun cites some outdated research from the US and confuses chatrooms with social-networking sites, but this about Canadian law and online child exploitation is notable: Because Canada's age of consent is 14, "under Canadian law, a 54-year-old man from Berlin can fly to Vancouver to have consensual sex with a 14-year-old girl he met on Facebook. Chillingly, neither the young girl's … [Read more...] about Laws & child exploitation

Facebook more public

September 6, 2007 By Anne Leave a Comment

A survey of 27 EU member countries plus Iceland and Norway found that "European children are well aware of the potential risks of Internet and mobile phone use but are confidently embracing digital technologies, believing they are capable of handling any problem that might arise without the help of a parent," according to an article in the portal Tiscali.Europe reports. That's good and bad news, … [Read more...] about Euro online youth self-reliant

‘eBullies’: Coping with cyberbullying

August 28, 2007 By Anne Leave a Comment

This is the kind of incident that adds to school absentee rates these days: In Texas, a student "posted a page that he attributed to a classmate, complete with the girl's picture and numerous photos of her alleged sex partners. Other students … were invited to view the page," the Detroit News reports. Within two days 100 students had posted comments on the page. "The boy eventually was suspended … [Read more...] about ‘eBullies’: Coping with cyberbullying
