For summer vacation downtime, kid-friendly online video is always an option – but it’s good for parents to know there are alternatives to Safety Mode-enabled YouTube. The new kid on the block in the kid video category is Kideos.com. It joins Zuitube.com, the video part of children’s Web browser Kidzui that was so popular it became its own Web site. For parents who have created “white lists” of appropriate sites for their kids in filter or operating system safety settings, these would be top picks. Kideos are sorted into 5 age groups: 0-2, 3-4, and so on up to age 10. About that service, Rick Broida of PC World said his favorite feature is Kideos’s free app for iPhones: “When you need a five-minute break from screaming in the car or the kids are getting restless at the restaurant, presto: child-friendly video on the go.” But for the sake of sanity, he advises parents to “avoid that insidious ‘Gummy Bear’ song at all costs.” In addition to its companion kid browser, Zuitube claims to have “the largest collection of online videos for kids,” adding new videos daily. We add new videos daily. “Kids can browse more than 6,000 channels that were created from popular searches and subjects in KidZui, and they can browse based on kid-created tags (in other words, they’re top kid picks).
