Teens criminally charged for cyberbullying

January 14, 2011 By Anne 2 Comments

Criminal charges for cyberbullying minors has long been possible, but now we have signs of a trend. Example: Two Florida teens, 15 and 16, received felony charges for creating a fake profile and posting "lewd comments and obscene pictures" of a fellow student, a local TV station reported. They were charged with aggravated stalking of a minor under 16. Of course "most of these laws don't use the … [Read more...] about Teens criminally charged for cyberbullying

School social workers on cyberbullying: Study

January 13, 2011 By Anne 3 Comments

A study published this month in the journal Children & Schools found that 45% of school social workers for grades pre-K through 12 "feel ill-equipped" to deal with cyberbullying, PsychCentral.com reports. I honestly think part of the reason for that high number is because cyberbullying has been so misrepresented and misunderstood in our society to date – represented all too much as a … [Read more...] about School social workers on cyberbullying: Study

Attorneys sanctioned for cyberbullying

January 4, 2011 By Anne 1 Comment

I hope no parent thinks cyberbullying is just "kid stuff." Before we can really expect our children to put a stop to it, we adults will have to stop modeling social aggression ourselves! Case in point (no pun intended): "Two Florida lawyers who called each other a 'retard' and 'scum sucking loser' in escalating email insults [over six months] have been sanctioned by the state supreme court," the … [Read more...] about Attorneys sanctioned for cyberbullying

Parents’ own cyberbullying struggles

December 6, 2010 By Anne Leave a Comment

The parents of kids targeted by digital bullying and harassment often face some serious challenges of their own, as they work toward ending a child's ordeal. That's a key take-away from New York Times reporter Jan Hoffman's thoughtful front-page story on cyberbullying yesterday. Often their children, even when enduring a lot of emotional pain, don't want them to get involved (fearing a parent only … [Read more...] about Parents’ own cyberbullying struggles

Cyberbullying: What I’ve learned so far

November 26, 2010 By Anne 9 Comments

A sequel to "Notes from a conference on bullying," posted last week.... Cyberbullying incidents don't happen in a vacuum. I'm saying this because I keep running into signs that adults do think they are events that somehow happen in a vacuum or come in out of the blue. However, since Facebook activity is a reflection of users and their lives – and much of the focus of most teens' lives is … [Read more...] about Cyberbullying: What I’ve learned so far
