Risk & Safety

Great reporting on OSTWG

June 8, 2010 By Anne Leave a Comment

I have been following online safety news for more than a dozen years and have rarely seen a reporter get it so right. Check out eSchool News on the Net-safety report we delivered to Congress on Friday: "Youth Safety on a Living Internet: Report of the Online Safety and Technology Working Group." Managing editor Laura Devaney nailed it. I think it's pretty unusual for somebody so involved in a … [Read more...] about Great reporting on OSTWG

OSTWG report: Why a ‘living Internet’?

June 7, 2010 By Anne 21 Comments

"Youth Safety on a Living Internet," the title of the just-released report of the Online Safety & Technology Working Group (OSTWG), is significant. It says a lot about the state of youth Internet safety because it says a lot about the state of the Internet now. This is not just technology or even "content" we're talking about, as we all know. It's behavior, or sociality, every bit as much as … [Read more...] about OSTWG report: Why a ‘living Internet’?

What I think they mean by "ambitious" is really smart: in several ways: … [Read more...] about Cartoon Network does anti-bullying *intelligently*

June 3, 2010 By Anne Leave a Comment

Hey, parents, if you use and like YouTube's safety features (Safety Mode, the profanity filter for comments, and its video-rich Help section), you might post your comments below their blog post about "Celebrating Internet Safety Month." It would be interesting to get parents' views. Judging by the comments under their post, most people who have something to say about YouTube's safety features are … [Read more...] about What do you think of YouTube’s safety tools?

Major exposure for ‘Overexposed’: TrendMicro’s winner

June 2, 2010 By Anne Leave a Comment

A little overexposure for the grand-prize winner in TrendMicro's online-safety video contest wouldn't hurt! "Overexposed," produced by Nicholas Chen and Edan Freiberger, gets its slightly funny, slightly scary message across in under two minutes (watch it here). Its subject and the number of submissions in its category "Keeping a good rep online" both point to how top-of-mind online reputation … [Read more...] about Major exposure for ‘Overexposed’: TrendMicro’s winner
