JuicyCampus: Good bye, good riddance

February 11, 2009 By Anne Leave a Comment

Citing tough economic times as the reason, gossip site JuicyCampus has shut down. "I'm not shedding any tears for [founder Matt Ivester, who made the announcement]," my ConnectSafely co-director Larry Magid writes at CBSNEWS.com. "What he refers to as 'lighthearted gossip of college life' was, in many situations, vicious innuendos, hateful messages, and downright lies. In covering the site ... Pact for solid social Web safety measures in Europe

February 11, 2009 By Anne Leave a Comment

This is timely news for global Safer Internet Day (today): 17 social-media companies across Europe have struck a deal with the European Commission to put in place safeguards for young social networkers by April, The Guardian reports. It's more about growing up more publicly than ever and maybe a bit of denial on our … [Read more...] about MySpace’s PR problem

Another imposter profile

February 6, 2009 By Anne Leave a Comment

Our ConnectSafely forum gets reports of these all the time - posing as someone else, including fictional people, is not unique to any social site or technology - but this case is particularly ugly. "Eighteen-year-old high school student Anthony Stancl is accused of creating a Facebook profile belonging to a nonexistent teenage girl and then, between approximately the spring of 2007 and November of … [Read more...] about Another imposter profile

Digital dating abuse

February 5, 2009 By Anne Leave a Comment

Sexting (sending naked photos of oneself or peers) is one form of it. Other forms: nonstop text messages from/to a boyfriend or girlfriend (or anyone), a digital form of stalking; sending around unbecoming photos or videos of someone via phone or Web; hacking into a peer's profile and cruelly misrepresenting him in comments that look like they're coming from him; or posting mean comments to … [Read more...] about Digital dating abuse
