How brave commenters are growing the power of Lewinsky’s talk

March 27, 2015 By Anne Leave a Comment

"Together, we have the power to protect the most vulnerable among us." There never was a truer, more urgent call to the world's social media users. It's from Nadia Goodman, TED's social media editor, in a blog post about the digital aftermath of posting the video of Monica Lewinsky's TED talk in the TED site. [This is a followup to my post on Sunday about the talk, which has gotten nearly 2 … [Read more...] about How brave commenters are growing the power of Lewinsky’s talk

Monica Lewinsky’s talk going viral: A sign

March 22, 2015 By Anne Leave a Comment

At some point yesterday, shortly after TED posted it, Monica Lewinsky's 2015 TED Talk had about 198,000 views. One day later, as of this writing, it had gotten 644,394. I believe the reason for this is not just because we're encouraged ourselves when someone has the courage to turn horrific public humiliation into social change. It's also because of the timing of Lewinsky's talk. "There are two … [Read more...] about Monica Lewinsky’s talk going viral: A sign

Well, South African journalist Tony Shapshak recently showed in a TED Talk in Edinburgh how necessity is the mother of (tech) innovation, and that innovation is certainly not just happening in Silicon Valley, Bangalore, or the Zhongguancun part of Beijing, but … [Read more...] about ‘The gold’ of connected learning, innovation worldwide: The learners

Heart to heart: How connection protects & grows resilience

February 14, 2014 By Anne 1 Comment

Back in 2008, I wrote about evidence that social networks – our social circles, as experienced online or offline – are a source of health and safety. They're also protective in the way that fellow family and community members have each other's backs. And the evidence is growing that meaningful social connections increase safety and well-being. Here's more evidence of how connecting with others … [Read more...] about Heart to heart: How connection protects & grows resilience

Exploring what parenting & social media are teaching us

June 8, 2013 By Anne Leave a Comment

NetFamilyNews is less and less about tech parenting and more and more about just parenting (and in every other way working with) children and young people in this networked world. That's because – over the 15 years I've been on this beat, this exploration – it has become clearer and clearer that this time of discontinuity (and how we're dealing with it) is so much more about our humanity than our … [Read more...] about Exploring what parenting & social media are teaching us
