‘Social norming’ for risk prevention

November 1, 2008 By Anne Leave a Comment

This story at NPR.org is not about technology (though very few risk-prevention and online-safety stories really are). It's about a successful program in changing social norms to lower student risk, and it might be a model for 1) lowering risk in young people's online experiences - including the reinforcement of self-destructive behavior such as cutting, eating disorders, and substance abuse - and … [Read more...] about ‘Social norming’ for risk prevention

The ISTTF: Chicken or egg?

September 26, 2008 By Anne Leave a Comment

"ISTTF" stands for Internet Safety Technical Task Force, the result of an agreement last January between 49 state attorneys general (minus Texas) and MySpace. The emphasis is on the word "technical," because the attorneys general basically charged the task force, of which I'm a member, with reviewing technical solutions to online youth risk - "age verification" technology being their stated … [Read more...] about The ISTTF: Chicken or egg?

I don't think anybody else heard that quite as acutely as an advocate of … [Read more...] about Virtual Worlds field trip

‘Law ‘n’ order’ in virtual worlds

August 29, 2008 By Anne Leave a Comment

It's a fledgling concept, but there are some interesting community-policing efforts afoot in virtual worlds such as Second Life, VZones, World of Warcraft, and mobile-phone-based Cellufun for mobile phone users, the Washington Post reports. For example, "in World of Warcraft, a popular online fantasy game, a character who is acting out runs the risk of being attacked by a group of self-appointed … [Read more...] about ‘Law ‘n’ order’ in virtual worlds

MySpace ever more mobile

July 25, 2008 By Anne Leave a Comment

Trying to block MySpace at school (or home or anywhere) is getting harder, since...1. "For teens, the future is mobile," CNET reports, and2. MySpace (not to mention other social sites) is getting increasingly mobile. MySpace just announced its new social-networking app for the iPhone (available free in iPhone's App Store), Internet News reports. With it, iPhone users can "search the network and … [Read more...] about MySpace ever more mobile
