Major obstacle to universal broadband & what can help

March 15, 2010 By Anne 2 Comments

Last week Chairman Julius Genachowski unveiled the children-and-family part of the FCC's universal broadband plan, designed to enable, among other things, 21st-century education. There's just one problem: Schools have long turned to law enforcement for guidance in informing their communities about youth safety on the Net, broadband or otherwise, and the guidance they're getting scares parents, … [Read more...] about Major obstacle to universal broadband & what can help

PBS Frontline’s ‘Digital Nation’: Presenting our generation with a crucial choice

February 1, 2010 By Anne 8 Comments

Seems to me, Gever Tully's Tinkering School would be the perfect antidote for all the concern about kids and digital media expressed in PBS Frontline's "Digital Nation" – hands-on problem-solving, lots of tools, collaboratively learning by doing, giving kids time to work the problem, celebrating and analyzing failures, teaching that success is embedded in the process (watch his TED Talk about … [Read more...] about PBS Frontline’s ‘Digital Nation’: Presenting our generation with a crucial choice

FTC’s milestone report on virtual worlds

December 10, 2009 By Anne 1 Comment

I think it's important for parents to keep in mind when reading … [Read more...] about FTC’s milestone report on virtual worlds

Facebook’s privacy changes

December 9, 2009 By Anne Leave a Comment

Facebook has been known to make a few waves when it announces changes to privacy features, so it's probably hoping that, now with more than 350 million users, the latest changes won't make a tsunami. This week's redesign, which has been in the works since last summer, is meant to both simplify things and give users more control – "more granular control over who can see individual pieces of content … [Read more...] about Facebook’s privacy changes

From users to citizens: How to make digital citizenship relevant

November 16, 2009 By Anne 4 Comments

"Digital citizenship" is a rapidly expanding conversation in the online-safety field. Is it one we should be having? Is it relevant to young people, the "citizens" we all have in mind? On a recent conference panel, Prof. Tanya Byron of the UK seemed to suggest not – too abstract or complicated maybe. I agree with her a lot of the time but not on this point, because I think digital citizenship is … [Read more...] about From users to citizens: How to make digital citizenship relevant
