Why do kids text so much?

July 2, 2010 By Anne 3 Comments

I enjoyed these observations of a mobile tech pundit on why his 13-year-old granddaughter, Caroline – who he says sends 200+ text messages a day, seven days a week – and her peers are so into texting.... First there's the urgency/immediacy factor, J. Gerry Purdy writes: The little trill that sounds when a message has arrived creates a sense of urgency to respond that becomes a chain reaction … [Read more...] about Why do kids text so much?

Twitterers in US and Japan

June 22, 2010 By Anne 4 Comments

Micro-blogging via Twitter has really taken off in Japan. In fact, proportionately more Japanese than Americans tweet: 16.3% of Japan's Internet users vs. 9.8% of the US's, according to an article in the Washington Post. Compare that to Facebook use in Japan at only 3% of Net users vs. 62% of US Net users also using Facebook, the article cites Nielsen research as showing. Japan's No. 1 social … [Read more...] about Twitterers in US and Japan

Sexting primer for parents: In case some basics would help

April 23, 2010 By Anne 1 Comment

A lot of sexting numbers have been tossed around the airwaves after four separate national studies. I'd go with the latest (last December) from the Pew Internet & American Life Project: 4% of US 12-to-17-year-olds have sent "sexts," 15% have received one from someone they know (see this for more). Why Pew? Because they focused on the age range and issue of greatest concern due to … [Read more...] about Sexting primer for parents: In case some basics would help

2010 social Web snapshot: Nielsen & Pew

January 6, 2010 By Anne Leave a Comment

Last year, the time Americans spent social networking grew 277%, Twitter grew 500%, and the average US worker spends five hours a moth visiting social network sites at the office. Oh yeah, and Facebook is the No. 3 site for Americans 65 and older (smart grandparents). All this is according to Nielsen's Fact Sheet 2010. As for general Internet use (not just the social part), Nielsen says there are … [Read more...] about 2010 social Web snapshot: Nielsen & Pew
