March 13, 2012 By Anne 5 Comments

Last week, Part 1 about the "whitewater-kayaking kind of learning needed today"; here, in Part 2, a great example: An alternative headline might be: "A bucket of bricks for learning," but I'll get to the bricks in a minute. First the backstory. Marianne Malmstrom teaches the richest possible kind of media literacy to and with, elementary and middle school students at the Elisabeth Morrow School … [Read more...] about ‘Save the Universe’: Clear space for learning

Revisiting copyright law – worldwide

February 21, 2012 By Anne Leave a Comment

Shades of the US's SOPA (anti-anti-piracy legislation) debate in eastern Europe, quite literally (see this Associated Press story): Street and online protests in Poland, the Czech Republic, and Slovenia against the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, or ACTA, remind me of a killer TED Talk by copyright legal expert and Harvard University law professor Lawrence Lessig: "Reexamining the Remix." We've always known that social behaviors and norms are expressed collectively by organizations as … [Read more...] about Anti-social media companies will be obsolete

October 19, 2011 By Anne 1 Comment

Because we all learn by practicing and to get its middle schoolers ready for adult life in a digitally enhanced networked world, The School at Columbia University created The Social Network. "It’s basically the pre-kindergarten version of Facebook," Forbes reports. There's also The Tube for sharing videos and The Gallery for photos. All of it is archived at the end of the year so that – with … [Read more...] about School helps its students practice social networking

My ISTE 2011: Notes from a giant conference

July 1, 2011 By Anne Leave a Comment

To me, ISTE – with some 18,000 attendees from 68 countries having converged on Philadelphia this week – is like looking out the window from a fast train through a dense urban area: mostly a blur, but your eye freeze-frames what's meaningful to you. So I always come away feeling enriched by the updates and insights I glean and the fresh dose of inspiration I get from connecting with people who love … [Read more...] about My ISTE 2011: Notes from a giant conference
