March 9, 2023 By Anne Leave a Comment

The youth market researchers at Ypulse just reported that 83% of millennial parents agreed with their survey statement that "social media platforms should do more to police and prevent cyberbullying." Their concerns are certainly justified, because cyberbullying is "awful but lawful" – not generally a kind of online harm that law enforcement can address. But is it worse than the offline version … [Read more...] about A solution for ‘awful but lawful’

If anything needs to go viral, it’s this…

...the message, "Report it. Don't share it."  The "it" in this public awareness campaign Facebook just launched is child sexual abuse material (CSAM), the accurate term for what is typically called "child pornography" in the United States. Thankfully, it's extremely unlikely you'll ever see content like this. "The prevalence of this content on our platform is very low," Facebook researchers … [Read more...] about If anything needs to go viral, it’s this…

Safer Internet Day 2021: Ground youth safety & rights in dignity

February 8, 2021 By Anne 5 Comments

What better day than Safer Internet Day to take cyberbullying prevention and intervention to the next level – or at least break the discussion about it wide-open? And just four days after the UN Committee for the Rights of the Child brought digital rights into the Convention on the Rights of the Child. “In relation to the digital environment, it’s a game changer,” writes psychology professor Sonia … [Read more...] about Safer Internet Day 2021: Ground youth safety & rights in dignity

Finally! Solid cyberbullying data on tweens

October 15, 2020 By Anne 4 Comments

There is no better source on cyberbullying than the Cyberbullying Research Center, at least in the US. And this month, National Bullying Prevention Month in the US, CRC, in partnership with Cartoon Network, released data on a whole new group of kids: 9-to-12-year-olds. It may surprise you that we know very little about tweens’ experiences with cyberbullying. But that’s because of COPPA, the … [Read more...] about Finally! Solid cyberbullying data on tweens

2 new papers spell a turning point for digital safety & citizenship: Part 1

May 5, 2020 By Anne 1 Comment

The timing struck me. Though it seems all of life is at an inflection point now, in the middle of a pandemic, two just-published papers represent a crucial one for digital safety and citizenship education. Individually and together, they offer new guidance that simply mustn’t be lost in the Covid-19 din. The scholars point the way forward for teaching young people essential skills for life in a … [Read more...] about 2 new papers spell a turning point for digital safety & citizenship: Part 1
